BUSH TAPS IRAN-CONTRA VETERANS

* Former Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Elliott Abrams was appointed on June 28, 2001 to U.S. President George W. Bush's National Security Council. Abrams was a major figure in the Iran-contra scandal [=American arms sold to Iran, to negotiate the release of hostages taken in Lebanon, with secret funds from the arms sale given to terrorist Contras] that emerged in late 1986; he pleaded guilty in 1991 to two misdemeanor charges of lying to Congress but was pardoned by then-President George Bush (1989-1993) in 1992. Abrams now serves as a senior director of the Office for Democracy, Human Rights, and International Operations. (Source: New York Times 6/30/01)

* "Now Bush II has given Abrams a post that rewards his special experience. In the proud ranks of America's public servants, he will join other Iran-contra vets: Secretary of State Colin Powell; Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage; Otto Reich, assistant secretary of state for inter-American affairs; andŠJohn NegroponteŠU.N. ambassador." (Terry J. Allen, In These Times August 2001)
