At a time when President Bush and
other western leaders are telling everyone to save their faltering
economies by shelling out for stocks, bonds or a car they really need,
along comes ... Buy Nothing Day. That's right: on November 23, Adbusters
is encouraging folks to keep their wallets closed. If it all seems too
strange, well, it is. But really, which is stranger: that the world's
most egregious overconsumers should observe a symbolic day of restraint,
or that, in the nations that use 86% of the world's resources, shopping
should be framed as an act of patriotism? Held annually since 1993 on
the day after American Thanksgiving, Buy Nothing Day has grown from a
west-coast curiosity to a full-blown, international holiday from
shopping. It has become synonymous with street parties, parades, urban
art, and quiet times for building relationships with friends and family.
This year should be no different as thousands of celebrants in more than
50 countries take a break from the rigors of
"keeping-up-with-the-Joneses." A message of global responsibility has
never been more apt. What could be more patriotic than a frugal
Christmas? To help spread the message of Buy Nothing Day, we're offering
you this artwork to reproduce in your publication. To download

this global eco-holiday feel free to contact Sherry Yoon at < or
