Just watched a tape of John Boorman's "The Tailor of Panama," a deft rendering of John Le Carré's 1996 novel about Anglo-American intelligence/military hijinks in the post-Noreiga era. It's a timely flick.

As Salon's review of it notes, "The movie straightforwardly, almost offhandedly, paints Noriega as a Frankenstein's monster created by George Bush when he was head of the CIA and then dispatched when the general's rampant greed made him an embarrassment. It's typical of the movie's casual bluntness, its certainty that adults can take a cold-eyed, witty entertainment without having to be coddled." Since this movie presents Bush I history as farce, let's hope the new cycle of historical adventurism, Bush II, doesn't develop as tragedy.
