That is bad news. LF was a smart publication. As Doug and others in the "alt
press" know all too well, the economics of print publishing nowadays almost
necessitates a benefactor. (Paul Newman for The Nation, etc.) For those
without -- or with benefactors too fickle to stick around -- extinction is
always just around the corner. And hustling for money definitely puts a
cramp on producing quality editorial work. <sigh>

Bad news - just heard that Lingua Franca is folding, "having lost the
support of its major investor," which I suppose means BVD heir
Jeffrey Kittay.
As Alexander Cockburn said when the Soho News closed, pretty soon the
only place left to write will be bathroom walls.
