Numbers games (like conspiracy theories) are bad politics. They shift
attention from issues that can be debated to issues that belong in a lab
or a courtroom. Even if it were proven that someone was lying about the
casualties, it would be of no help to the antiwar movement. Just as
proof that the CIA murdered Kennedy would have the concrete result of
justifying Vietnam (a conspiracy, not an expression of U.S.
imperialism).

Carl should cool it. He has better things to say than to quibble about
numbers.
