I realize this is talking about cracking hope and/or trial versions of Windows XP, but full final versions of Windows XP professional have been distributed widely through pirate channels for nearly 2 months.

While there is an off-hand reference to this in the article, the article's most important point is that Microsoft's anti-copying protections are targeted at *legal* users doing what should be standard practice--installing their software on any machine they own. The fact that Microsoft can get away with such policies with little timely pressure by regulating agencies AND that quasi-religious/masochistic consumers don't expect more speaks volumes.
