This is the part of capitalist consciousness which (a) hasn't changed from pre-capitalist or even pre-class societies and (b) won't change under socialism. "Identity" is a bit of 20th-c. jargon that can be dropped, but people get satisfaction primarily from what they do in cooperation with others. Under capitalism, they have to sell their human activity in order to exercise it, but under all conditions they would desire to exercise it.
