One thought I can't brush away is this: if this is blowback, one of the fronts it's blowing back from is U.S. cold war strategy ...which resulted in the elimination of the left or of an organized left in the middle east (and other parts of the world) and in the strengthening (for lack of an alternative) of the fundamentalist religious right. The other front it's blowing back from is the world-wide economic devastation resulting from IMF/WorldBank/globalization policies.

I have not heard this said yet, but perhaps it behooves us to point this out in words and publicly...

If I am wrong--since my knowledge of history is sometimes more impressionistic than scholarly--I expect one or more of you will let me know.
