AMERICANS SUPPORT JEWISH STATE: POLL

Americans' sympathies lie more with the Israelis than the Palestinians in the current conflict in the Mideast, according to a CBS News poll released yesterday.

But the survey revealed many are concerned the conflict in the Middle East is making a terrorist attack on the United States more likely.

Some of the poll's findings:

* Americans' sympathies lie with the Israelis over the Palestinians by a 5-1 margin.

* Almost two-thirds think the Israeli military response was justified.

* Almost two-thirds think the steps the Israelis have taken only made terror attacks against Israel more likely.

* Almost half think the conflict in the Middle East is making a new terror attack on the United States more likely, while four in 10 think it will have no impact.

* People were more inclined - by a 51-30 percent margin - to think Israel was too quick to turn to a military solution.

* People were about evenly split on the question of whether the United States has a responsibility to help resolve the conflict.

* They are also evenly split on whether U.S. troops should be sent to the Middle East as peacekeepers and if U.S. troops would make a difference.

The poll of 616 adults was taken Monday and Tuesday and has an error margin of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
