I have been arguing the exact opposite, that the state of Israel can't exist without the US. It has become a "51st state", the United States in the Middle East with no possibility of an independent existence. This is true today regardless of Israel's' origins 50 years ago - genesis is no teleological explanation for (present) structure. American ruling class support for the state of Israel - especially the striking tendency of the far right and many Zionists to identify "America" with "Israel" - is quite rational in this regard. Only in this political ideological sense could "Israel" be described as "leading America", that is, the United States, into becoming a sort of universally hated "global Israel". It is what Said described as the tendency towards the "Israelization of US foreign policy". It has nothing inherently, essentially to do with "Jews", "Jewish lobbies" or even AIPAC; it is a sui generis _American_ imperial process that will be a disaster for American society and culture should it ever take permanent hold.

A virtual admission here in the U.S. of what the rest of the world already knows: that this an U.S. sponsored and sanctioned "green light" operation against the Palestinians, the first battle of the war against the Middle East, as I see it. But the Palestinian are somewhat like the Yugoslav in 1941, who "unexpectedly" went "off script" and rose up and overthrew their king, who wanted to sell out to the Nazis. This threw Hitler into one of his famous carpet-eating fits and caused the delay of the planned Nazi assault on the Soviet Union by one, perhaps crucial, month, while the Nazis crushed the Yugoslav rebellion. Obviously the dynamics are different in our present situation, but the U.S. did not want to fight the first battle of the Iraq war in Palestine.
The world remembers the Yugoslavs of 1941 as heroes, not terrorists.

Doug,
(excerpted) ........ If the US is telling Israel to stop its attacks and withdraw from the West Bank and Israel does not do that what the hell does that mean?
It means that the Empire does not control its policy to the Middle East and specifically Israel. It means that Israel is independent of the Empire and can jerk the empire around as it pleases. .......... Naji
