No doubt he was. It's deep hard stuff. To make it go down easier try:

N. Scott Arnold, Marx's Radical Critique of Capitslist Society, Oxford 1990, pp. 240-263, a nice clear summary of the basic argument;

Bardhan and Roemer, Introduction to their acollection, Market Socialism: The Current Debate, Oxford 1993 (and various other essays therein)

Rather longer:

Janos Kornai, The Socialist System, Princeton (K is a major Hayekian thinker, a former Marxist, Hungarian economist)

D. R. Steele, From Marx to Mises, Free Press (cranky and right wing but well argued and very clear)
