It's also an excuse for not going after the Repugs hammer and tongs. Why not aggressively sideline and alienate people who you think could be on your side, after all, rather than trying to persuade them by getting the bad guys? I mean, if things are as closely balanced as the last election indicates, and you've missed a crucial part of your base by veering too far right, a normal reaction would be to veer left to try to win those people back. Not all of them are as hard core anti-Democrat as some around here. Most probably aren't. They won't be won by demonizing their standard bearer and guilt tripping them. However, that's not the Dems reactoon--not even the progressive Dems. The question arises, why not?

Yes. Votes have to be won. I'm not dogmatic. The Dems could hypothetically, win mine back. They wouldn't have to support socialism to do that. I'm realistic. Social democracy or even New Deal liberalism would do.
