My father was a member of the Teamsters. I remember one day (in the early
seventies) he mentioned that it cost $500.00 to join the Teamsters, and my
mother quipped "I guess they want to make sure no proletarians can get in."
$500 WAS a huge amount of money in the early seventies.

I was in the Teamsters briefly in the late 80s, just after high school (I
sold hot dogs in the San Diego Zoo). It only cost me something like $15 a
month.
