Russian poll shows Putin's popularity rise, government's fall Interfax

Moscow, 28 August: In August, Russian President Vladimir Putin's popularity rating has gained 3 per cent and reached 76 per cent, while 20 per cent of Russians say they disapprove of his performance as the country's president, as compared with 73 per cent and 20 per cent in July, a poll said.

The poll was conducted by the All-Russian Centre for Public Opinion Studies [VTsIOM] among 1,600 Russian citizens on 21-27 August.

In August, 43 per cent of those polled said they support Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov, and 41 per cent of respondents said they disapprove of his work (against 43 per cent and 38 per cent in July).

Thirty-five per cent of respondents said they approve of the Russian government's performance, while 54 per cent said they disapprove of it (36 per cent and 48 per cent in July).

Putin is still the most trusted politician with 47 per cent, which is 3 per cent less than in July.

Second place is held by Sergey Shoygu, a One Russia party leader and the emergencies minister, with 17 per cent (18 per cent in July).

He is followed by Communist leader Gennadiy Zyuganov with 14 per cent (14 per cent in July), Liberal-Democratic Party [of Russia] leader Vladimir Zhirinovskiy with 10 per cent (8 per cent in July), Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov with 8 per cent (9 per cent), Moscow Mayor Yuriy Luzhkov with 8 per cent (8 per cent in July), Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matviyenko 7 per cent (5 per cent in July), Kemerovo Region governor Aman Tuleyev with 6 per cent (7 per cent), Yabloko party leader Grigoriy Yavlinskiy 6 per cent (6 per cent) and Union of Right Forces leader Boris Nemtsov 6 per cent (5 per cent in July).

Twenty per cent of those polled said they do not trust any Russian politician.
