Russian communists regain leadership in opinion polls

MOSCOW. Aug 29 (Interfax) - Gennady Zyuganov's Communist Party of the Russian Federation would win 34% of the votes if elections were held in Russia next Sunday. This is a significant change from the findings of a poll taken by the All-Russian Public Opinion Center in July, when 29% would have voted communist.

Support for the United Russia party dropped from 29% in July, to 26% now.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky's Liberal Democratic Party would take 9%, compared to 7% in July.

Support for Grigory Yavlinsky's Yabloko dwindled from 10% to 8%, while Boris Nemtsov's Union of Right Forces and Alevtina Fedulova's Russia's Women retain their 6%.

Other parties would not overcome the 5% barrier needed to have candidates on the party ticket elected.

The poll was held on August 21 - 27, and involved 1,600 Russians. The report on it reflects only the responses of those who intend to vote and who have made up their minds about which group to vote for.
