"Joe R. Golowka" <joeg at ieee.org> >...It lasted longest in the Ukraine where Makhno's partisans were able to fend off the Bolsheviks, Whites, Nationalists & others until 1921...

Jews too? Recently I read of many pogroms carried out under areas under Makhno's partisans control. http://www.google.com/search?q=Makhno+Jews http://www.shamash.org/listarchives/russian-jews/articles/Petlura THE SOVIET UNION SINCE 1917: Paradox of Survival by Nora Levin. New York University Press. Two volumes, 1,013 pp. Price of each volume $55, two-volume set $100. Foreign price $125 for a two-volume set.

Levin's vivid description of the Civil War raging in the Ukraine may best be expressed in a quotation from Israel Zangwill: "It is as Bolsheviks that the Jews of South Russia were massacred by the armies of Petlura, though the armies of Sokolov have massacred them as partisans of Petlura, the armies of Makhno as bourgeois capitalists, the armies of Grigoriev as Communists, and the armies of Denikin at once as Bolsheviks, capitalists, and Ukrainian nationalists. This means that while everybody was fighting everybody else, all felt free to rob and massacre the Jews for whatever reason they could invent on the spot."
