Why Either/Or? We do need social critique and social upheaval to deal with imperialism. But we do need to do something to deal the thugs in al Qaida. Unlike some here, perhaps, I think that the police--I don't mean the military figfhting wars and calling them police actions, but the cops and the FBI--serve a legitimate and necessary crime fighting function. There are bad guys out there who belong in jail. Al Qaida is among them. I say let the cops track 'em down and put 'em away, contrained by all the usual rules of due process. If they stuck to that sort of thing, the govt would be a lot less like Murder Inc.
But since you reject any use of state power to deal with any crime, however horrific, what is your suggestion about what to do with al Qaida? Maybe, have a social revolution here, dismantle imperialism, and thus leave it without reason to attack us? But maybe they will not like a socialist secular America either, and the revolution is not exactly immanent anyway. So should we just say, que sera, sera, serves us right, death to Empire? That'll make us real popularw ith the working class, I'll tell you.
