O'Neill quits as Treasury Secretary

Paul O'Neill will resign as Treasury secretary in the next few weeks, the Treasury Department said Friday. "It has been a privilege to serve the nation during these challenging times," O'Neill said in a letter today to President George W. Bush. "I wish you ever success as you provide leadership and inspiration for America and the world." O'Neill had been a controversial leader of the administration's economic team, but speculation about his resignation had quieted in recent months.
