It is interesting how much fiction (in drama, novel, TV, movies) arranges for its characters _not_ to be so chained (or at least makes those chains quite invisible). Henry James of course was quite explicit on this. In order to study human freedom you had to free your characters from economic constraint.
Query. There has been quite a fit of fictional treatment of spousal abuse in the last few decades. How often (I'm thinking primarily of movies and TV drama) does the wife's economic dependence on her abusive husband play a central role?
