BREINDEL JOURNALISM PRIZE OFFERS $10,000
February 11, 2002 -- Organizers of the Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Journalism announced yesterday that they are accepting submissions for the fourth annual competition.
The $10,000 award, which recognizes the editorial pursuit of freedom and American ideals, is named after Breindel, former editorial-page editor and columnist at The Post, who died in 1998 at the age of 42.
"In a year in which American patriotism has been put to the test, the standards, morals and ethics that Eric stood for now have broader resonance than ever," said Martin Singerman, director of the Breindel Foundation and former Post publisher.
"Eric championed those values his entire life.
"The terrible events of Sept. 11 have led almost all Americans to embrace these ideals and reaffirm a commitment to our nation and our way of life," said Singerman.
The award is funded primarily through a $250,000 commitment from News Corporation, The Post's parent company.
It is one of the most lucrative awards in journalism and commemorates Breindel's lifetime achievements.
Judges will be looking for entries that best reflect the spirit that animated Breindel's writing: love of country and its democratic institutions, as well as recognition of the evils of totalitarianism.
Journalists applying for the award should each submit no more than five editorials, columns or news stories written in the 2001 calendar year.
Submissions must be postmarked by April 26. There is a $25 entry fee.
