I get the impression that in the 1950s everybody in the New York Jewish Intellectual scene around City College had at one time or another called himself a trotskyist, but that what they meant by it was any kind of heterodox leftist who made new things up like Trotsky did and who thought literature was important. I think to them Trotskyist meant kind of what Western Marxism meant 20 years later: any smart person who quoted Marx approvingly, as opposed to diamatician.
