If Hardt & Negri's _Empire_, why not Henry David Thoreau? The Dover
thrift edition's _Civil Disobedience and Other Essays_ -- which
includes "Civil Disobedience," "Slavery in Massachusetts," "A Plea
for Captain John Brown," "Walking," and "Life without Principle" --
is yours for just one dollar. His works are also available at
<http://eserver.org/thoreau/thoreau.html> and other sites for free.
Besides, we do well to remember his opposition to the Mexican War
(1846-48), one of the major crossroads on the USA's path toward the
Empire.
