This assumes that Democrats and Republicans have significantly conflicting interests, which is false. Their conflicts are strictly secondary, not matters of principle. They share fundamentally a major principle: keeping the public out of politics. They "compete" only within that framework of a pacified public.
They may someday agree to electoral reforms -- but that will only be for one or two reasons: (a) as a way of calming massive public disturbances or (b) because they have worked out reforms with protections against enhanced public participation.
