Eric, sorry I can't refresh my memory of the Cumings and Kellner books right now. The Kellner book has been mis-shelved here at the SFPL (once, a wag put, "Why We Were In Vietnam, " by Norman Podhoretz in the Fiction shelves!)
And the Cummings, I skimmed at the Berkeley Public library. I'd assume though that both give higher marks (though this isn't saying much!) to print journalism vs. televisual spectacles.
Two memories of protest during the Gulf War, for y'all.
Bunch o' anarchists hectoring a vapid local ABC-TV news affiiate reporter shouting, "You're a Liar!" And during a huge surround the Phillip Burton Federal Bldg protest. some loons making it imposssible for the CNN reporter and cameraman to get good soundbites from such as Marcy Darnovsky (spelling?) who at the time was on the Socialist Review editorial collective. (For the SR statement on the War see the Gulf War Reader edited by Micah Sifry. There are some sharp comments on that piece in the Christison book I cited a while back published by U.C. Press on Palestine and the USG from Woodrow Wilson to Clinton.)
I tried to shut 'em up by telling them that how do y'all expect to get our side of the War out if you make it impossible for the media workers to interview folks on our side. Michael Pugliese
