Wednesday June 12, 10:05 am Eastern Time Brazil's Varig Cuts Air Service To Two Argentine Cities

SAO PAULO -(Dow Jones)- Brazilian airline Viacao Aereo Riograndense SA (E.VAR) , or Varig, has suspended service to the Argentine cities of Mendoza and Rosario indefinitely owing to weak demand, a company official said Wednesday.

Varig's service to the cities of Buenos Aires and Cordoba will continue.

A spokesman for Varig - which is the country's largest aviation group - also said the company has decided to put back seven planes leased from General Electric Corp. unit GE Capital.

GE declined to comment when asked about the seven Boeing Corp. (BA) 737s.

-And btw, our airlines are going fastly to bankrupcy. Varig had US$300 million -losses last years, while Transbrasil stopped its activities 6 months ago. At -least two commuter companies also went bankrupt and the remaining ones are -doing badly. To make things worse they embarked in a tariff war, with the -coming of a new low fare company. Good for consumers...for now, but it can -be the final nail in the airlines´s coffin.....
