ED: This raises three questions: (1) is writing good because it reads well formally or (2) is writing good because it is substantively interesting or (3) a combination of (1) and (2)........

Now, when decidng what to read in my "adult" life, I like a little more (2) than (1), but that changes when you are grading writing. I never felt comfortable grading students on their writing because I do not think I am a good enough writer in the first place to be telling others how well they is doing it. I felt the same way about many of my profs.
