** Are Happy Times Here Again?

Shipments by IT manufacturers are on the upswing, but well below the levels of a year ago, the government reported Wednesday. Nonetheless, the report suggests that businesses are beginning to spend money again on computer hardware as the economy recovers from a recession.

The value of computer shipments increased by a seasonally adjusted 1.5% between December and January, after declining 0.9% between November and December, the Commerce Department reports. However, the value of computers shipped in January was 28.3% below January 2001 levels. Computer storage device shipments, up 10.8% between November and December, gained an additional 3.0% between December and January. The value of storage devices manufacturers shipped in January fell 5.0% from a year earlier.

The value of new orders for computers rose 4.8% between December and January, reversing a November-to-December decline of 5.3%. New computer orders in January were 25.5% below January 2001 levels. - Eric Chabrow
