Part of disabled people's oppression is that society keeps up the myth that it is the able-bodied "saint" who saves them - in this case Sullivan to Keller. Keller was a dynamo in and of her own from beginning to end. And Hollywood wasn't about to have the movie portray the radical speeches she gave at many many political events.
