Walking into the twilight zone of political insanity, (see http://www.commondreams.org/views02/0525-09.htm), the Green Party has decided to run a candidate in Minnesota against Paul Wellstone , the most progressive guy in the Senate who is in the fight for his life this fall. When Nader ran, the Greens at least had the argument that they were trying to create a threat to force the Dems to articulate a progressive agenda.

But in Minnesota, just to run a candidate, any candidate, they have nominated Ed McGaa who even the Greens are not sure even supports the Green Party platform. While there is some grumbling against Wellstone for his response after Sept 11, McGaa actually supports the war on terrorism and his proud of his 110 combat missions in Vietnam. And he has engaged in nasty canards of anti-semitism in arguing that Wellstone is "more loyal to Israel than he is to the United States."

The Greens argued that they differed from progressive Democrats in that they would create an organization that could consistently elect good candidates. What Minnesota shows is all they have created is an organization bent on nominating spoiler candidates, whatever their politics.
