Halleluia, I received my visa and WILL be writing y'all from the Third Rome shortly. Until then, just six people chosen at random on the streets of beautiful, much-missed-by-me Moscow:

The Russia Journal :: The Russia Journal :: Opinion || Articles What do you think the Russian authorities should do to prevent terrorist sieges?

Yelena Busovikova

VLAS VLASOV, STUDENT

To make life safer the Russian authorities should introduce restrictions in the passport regime, because there are many people who live in Moscow illegally. They just buy fake registrations or passports. All the markets are full of illegal people who spread terrorism and drugs. What else can the authorities do? I think there is nothing else they can do to prevent sieges from happening.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NATALYA STARYKH, ADVERTISING DIRECTOR

What the authorities should do is get things straight with Chechnya through negotiations. In order for us to live in peace Chechnya has to be at peace too. So, the recipe is simple. The war there has been going on forever and I think negotiations could be faster. Chechens are really hard people to hold negotiations with, but there should be a special approach taken with them. I believe that our Russian wisdom is capable of persuading them to end the war and find a compromise. They have just forgotten what it’s like to live in peace. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TATYANA BUDAKOVA, SPECIALIST IN ELECTRONIC COMMERCE

Concerning people’s security, it seems to me that the authorities would do well to pay decent salaries to people who work in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Then, those people would work for their consciences, not for money. They would be financially secure like police abroad and they would not be afraid of losing their jobs. Then the militsiya would be more responsible in its work. Also, the Russian authorities should pay more attention to Chechnya. It’s a tumor. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- STANGLE LU, CONSULTANT

I am originally from Germany and I am shocked by what is going on in the world. There is danger everywhere, not only in Russia. Frankly, I don’t know what the authorities can do to prevent situations like this. We are all pacifists in Europe. The only solution is to defeat terrorism using peace and the power of good. Military power won’t be successful in solving any problem. Even though these people brought a lot of grief we have to try to find a compromise with them. It’s really sad to see how much hatred there is in Russian people after the siege. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ALEXANDER IVANOV, STUDENT

It’s really hard to answer, because the situation with terrorism is very complicated and tense – not only in our country, but in the whole world. I think the Russian authorities are powerless in the face of terrorism. We are all hostages of the situation. The important thing is not to be infected by the public mood. The media talks about it so much that people get depressed, and do nothing but sit in front of their televisions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DMITRY VOLKOV, MANAGER

The authorities must restrict the entry system to Moscow. That’s the only solution. It’s impossible to fight terrorism, I think, while places like Afghanistan, Chechnya and so on exist. They have terrorism in their blood. I always see on TV how little children hold rifles there.
