Durbin in the mid-70's hung out a bit with the chapter of the New American Movement near where he lived. (NAM was the org. that DSOC swallowed up to create DSA. At the time of the merger, NAM had around 1,500 members or so, DSOC, 7,000 or so. Growth projections by the, "optimists of the will, " have not, as yet, come true.) Doubt if Durbin ever joined up, but, in 2000 when pundits and politicos were making noises about Durbin being on Gore's short list for VP, I wondered if left committments in his past scared off the Gore camp.
