He flatly refuses Gardiner's entreaties and, in "a voice that prolongingly moulded every word," issues instructions to his Chief Mate: "In three minutes from this present instant warn off all strangers: then brace forward again, and let the ship sail as before." (Gardiner is the captain of the Rachel.)
