Be a good American. Get a lobotomy.

There was a lovely little column in today's Citizen (the Observer section) entitled "Mad Science". It detailed in capsule form some medical-scientific oddities taken from other books on the subject.

One that caught my eye was about this American doctor, Walter Freeman, who popularized lobotomies in America during the late 40s and early 50s. In commenting on his work, he apparently said words to the effect of, "Lobotomized patients make good American citizens . . . the operation has an amazing potential for controlling society's misfits, schizophrenics, homosexuals, communists...." According to the article, by the mid-50s, over 19 000 Americans alone, including children, had been lobotomized.
