When I met Doug last yr. in S.F., Christian Parenti was the 2nd most interesting dinner table controversialist at the restaurant. Chritian recommended the work of Oliver Roy on the Afghan mujahedeen, "Islam and Resistance in Afghanistan: Oliver Roy (1985) Cambridge University Press, Cambridge. http://waf.gn.apc.org/j3p15.htm ("Women Against Fundamentalism, " website.) and , "Oliver Roy, The Failure of Political Islam, " from Harvard University Press.

Somewhere I read (Gilles Kepel, "Jihad: The Trail of Political Islam, " Harvard U. Press, I think) that Roy was a Maoist in the 70's. Michael Pugliese
