Watching the Emerging Democratic Majority Recede Into the Sunset

Has anyone here mentioned one obvious reason the
elections went GOP--in an economic downturn, the
country moves to the right?  As long as the GOP can
deflect attention from its own economic management, it
can fuel the immigrant-bashing, anti-welfare stuff. 
So it's likely the Republicans would have done well
even without 9/ll.
