'SEXIEST' NATIONS By BILL HOFFMANN

Americans love sex - and hop into the sack about 138 times a year, a new survey has revealed.

But, believe it or not, we're far from the horniest nation in the world.

Britain, Germany, Poland and even Canada score substantially higher when it comes to bravado in the bedroom, according to the 2002 Global Sex Survey.

And while the United States number is certainly good, it's actually one bonk below the world average of 139 shagfests annually.

Not surprisingly, the French, famous for their super-sized libidos, are the most amorous, having intercourse an average of 167 times a year - or once every 52 hours.

They're followed by the Netherlands with 158, Denmark with 158, Canada with 150 and Britain with 149.

In a poll shocker, two nations thought to be leaders in exotic sexual practices, came in dead last - people in Singapore have just 110 sexual encounters a year and those in Thailand just 112.

And in another surprise, 11 percent of the world's adult population has never, ever had sex.

The Internet survey of 50,000 people by condom-maker Durex also asked folks for the reasons they had sex for the very first time.

More than a third, 36 percent, said they went all the way because they were "ready and it felt right," 28 percent said they were in love, and another 4 percent admit they were drunk when they lost their virginity.

Additionally, four in 10 people in India revealed they didn't have sex until they were married.

Asked how long people would wait before having sex with a new partner, 24 percent said it would happen within a month and 17 percent said the first night. Norwegians were most likely to have sex from Day 1.

On the subject of sexual fantasies, 65 percent said they dreamed of sleeping with a celebrity, while 36 percent said they thought about doing it with their best friend's partner.

It also turns out that men are less loyal to their friends than women - 42 percent have fantasized about relations with their best friend's partner, compared with 25 percent of women.

As far as one-night stands are concerned, 50 percent of those quizzed have had at least one. Men are also more likely than women to have a one-night fling - 54 percent compared to 42 percent.

Which country has the sexiest celebs in the world?

The United States, according to the poll, with Jennifer Lopez ranked as the hottest woman, with 26 percent of the vote, and Angelina Jolie in second place, with 22 percent.

In the male-celeb category, Brad Pitt was numero uno, with 42 percent, followed by English soccer starr David Beckham, with 14 percent.
