Jerusalem Post Sep. 30, 2002 Pupils to study Ze'evi legacy next week By NINA GILBERT
The nation's pupils are to study the legacy of late Moledet leader Rehavam Ze'evi on Sunday to mark a year since his assassination by terrorists from the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
The Left expressed outrage over the plan yesterday, saying that it in effect brings Ze'evi's idea of "transferring" Palestinians out of the territories into the school system.
Former education minister Yossi Sarid (Meretz) said the transfer ideology could not be separated from Ze'evi, saying they are "one in the same." Yiftah-Palmah Ze'evi, the Moledet leader's son, responded to the criticism by saying that the idea of "transfer" is a legitimate topic for public debate, especially after the killing of more than 600 Israelis in the past two years.
Moreover, he said, his father's legacy is "broad," and in particular teaches the "uncompromising love for the Land of Israel."
At the initiative of Education Minister Limor Livnat, a circular was published at the beginning of the school year that included an instruction to teachers to dedicate an hour to the study of the Zionist contributions of Ze'evi in achieving "national aims." According to the instructions, it is "fitting and recommended" to conduct the study hour.
It also notes that, at a time of security challenges to the state, it is fitting to "study the efforts made to establish an independent state that is the national home to all Jews." Ze'evi was an army man who started his career in the Palmah and retired after serving as OC Central Command and Operations Branch.
Ze'evi's Moledet Party espoused the "transfer" of Arabs out of the territories as a solution to the Israeli-Arab problem. However, Ze'evi's ideology is not mentioned in the ministry instructions.
Sarid said the study of Ze'evi's legacy is tantamount to sending the "transfer" ideology "through the back door" into the educational system.
But Hadash MK Tamar Gozanzky (Hadash) said Livnat's decision is "dangerous," especially in light of the racist views of Israeli Jewish youth as revealed by many polls.
"Instead of fighting racism and promoting coexistence, bringing Ze'evi's ideology into the schools only boosts this phenomenon," Gozansky said.
She added that the move also legitimizes Ze'evi's views and encourages Israeli youth to admire him. Palmah Ze'evi said the Left is trying to reduce the Moledet leader's legacy to a "narrow issue."
