The Ann Arbor store, which has a much larger "staff" than the recently-unionized Minneapolis store, had two previous organizing drives in 1996 and 1997, with the assistance of two different UFCW locals. In 1996, employees filed for an election but later cancelled the date after a stern talking-to from management. Subsequently, 10 other Borders stores went on to have union elections, but in most cases the union wasn't consumated, and even when it was, employees were left unsatisfied. The Minneapolis store is the only currently unionized store.
The union vote in Ann Arbor, which will be scheduled soon, will be the 12th union election at a Borders store in the past six years. Employee/organizers are confident that this time they will keep the date.
