Coming hot on the heels of a union victory in Minneapolis, employees at the Ann Arbor Borders Books - the original flagship store of the Ann Arbor-based international bookseller - have announced that they've succumbed yet again to the seductive promises of another brawny and charming UFCW local, and have petitioned the NLRB for a union election seeking to authorize UFCW 876 as their bargaining agent; in return for the UFCW's assistance, the Borders employees have promised to rock the UFCW's world with their demands for union democracy and transparency in contract negotiations.

The Ann Arbor store, which has a much larger "staff" than the recently-unionized Minneapolis store, had two previous organizing drives in 1996 and 1997, with the assistance of two different UFCW locals. In 1996, employees filed for an election but later cancelled the date after a stern talking-to from management. Subsequently, 10 other Borders stores went on to have union elections, but in most cases the union wasn't consumated, and even when it was, employees were left unsatisfied. The Minneapolis store is the only currently unionized store.

The union vote in Ann Arbor, which will be scheduled soon, will be the 12th union election at a Borders store in the past six years. Employee/organizers are confident that this time they will keep the date.
