I think that's a terrible idea. One of the Guardian's strengths is that its independent of any political party. Once you tie a newspaper to a particular party, then its going to be seen as the mouthpiece of that party and not taken terribly seriously. The Guardian might have a wider readership than frustrated intellectuals, but its still a newspaper read by intellectuals. It has a readership of 400,000, which is good for a broadsheet, but marginal compared to the newspaper readership at large (and dwarfed by the combined readership of the other broadsheets). A better example might the Mirror, a left wing tabloid. A left wing New York Post, owned by a non-profit foundation (with total independence), would be more effective. You have to embrace popular culture, otherwise only the converted are going to read it. And hire good sports writers. Make it compete as a profitable commercial entity, otherwise its pointless.
