Question about theory of the individual

There are those who say that the individual (human) is a
creation of society, of culture, not only physically, as is
obvious, but mentally as well.  And, some add, beginning at
a historically observable point.  I would like some pointers
to writing about this theory (or set of theories), especially
if they can be found on web pages, if anyone would care to
come up with some.  My thanks in advance.
