Prescriptions for an ideal left culture given by a variety of leftists have been contradictory. We are exhorted to be nasty and funny; at the same time, we are urged to piously repeat platitudes (terrorism is barbaric, fundamentalists are our enemies, etc.). Avoid fist-shaking when it comes to anti-war rallies, but let everyone know that you cheer the death of an appropriate object of hate.

Fight evil.
