Is it simply Catholic lobbying that has thwarted stem cell research - aren't other religious groups to blame here as well? Bush, for example, is Methodist, and undeoubtedly has ties to a rainbow of fundie groups, but Reeve singles out the Catholic Church. Are there any other human rights concerns (outside the religious sphere) regarding stem cell research (as in the area of cloning, for example)?

Reeve Blames Church, Bush for Research Obstruction Tue Sep 17,10:23 AM ET
LONDON (Reuters) - Christopher Reeve, the Hollywood star paralyzed from the neck down, said on Tuesday the Catholic Church and President Bush had obstructed research that might free him from his wheelchair.
[...]
"There are religious groups--the Jehovah's Witness, I believe--who think it's a sin to have a blood transfusion. Well, what if the president for some reason decided to listen to them, instead of to the Catholics, which is the group he really listens to in making his decisions about embryonic stem cell research?" Reeve was quoted as saying.
