Still a big drop, but I'm very, very happy things finally seem to be turning around on the demographic level (kepping fingers crossed).

Decline in Russia's population slows down - statistics Interfax

Moscow, 19 September: Russia's population was 143.4m people as of 1 August 2002, and it had decreased by 505,900 people, or 0.35 per cent, in January-July this year, the Russian State Statistics Committee reported on Thursday [19 September].

As compared to last year, the decrease in Russia's population slowed down, as in January-July 2001 it decreased by 536,400, or 0.37 per cent.

The natural decline in the population (the difference between the number of deaths and births) was 561,200 people in January-July 2002, which is less than in the same period in 2001 by 700 people, the committee said. The natural decline was partly (by 9.9 per cent) compensated by growing migration.

According to the committee, 811,300 babies were born in January-July 2002, as compared to 761,300 last year, while 1,372,500 people died in this period in 2002, against 1,323,200 in 2001. Thus, both the birth and death rates in Russia grew against last year, with the birth rate growing faster. The number of deaths among babies under 1 year was 10,800, against 11,200 in January-July 2001.

Statistics experts also pointed to a growth in the number of registered divorces and a decline in registered marriages. Russia registered in the first seven months of this year 495,300 marriages (496,900 last year), and 507,500 divorces (429,100 in 2001).

The committee also said 115,400 people came to Russia from abroad for permanent residence in January-July 2002, against 97,500 last year, and 60,100 people left Russia for other countries (72,000 in 2001). Thus the migration growth in the seven months of this year was 55,300 people, which is almost twice as much as in January-July 2001 (25,500).
