He also points out elsewhere that much of the "we don't need the bomb" claims from the military leaders were a combination of a) inter-service rivaly ["We don't need a bomb because The Navy can win this war!"] and b) political positioning ["(now that the war is over and we can forget about Dresden) I can't believe we used such a barbaric weapon!"]
