I do not think it is a good analogy, Brad. GDR was not invaded by anyone - the change came from within.

Then I guess the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA (just 120 miles south of Berkely) training GIs in, inter alia, Arabic at $100+k per student is a work of my imagination while getting high on good California weed.

Besides, we heard time and again that US forces have been cooperating with the Kurds since the beginning of the hostilities,a nd they are even using Kurdish troops in combat. How difficult do you think it would be to transport one of such Kurshish units to bagdad, dress them in civilan clothes and parade before the cameras? Do you think that the US public, 40% of whom belives that Saddam was personally involved in 9/11 and 60% or so believes in Satan, would tell the difference?
