Almost certainly in the sciences. The USSR had a cult of modernization and
industrialization. For that, you need scientists, lots of them and good
ones.
I have a Brezhnev-era textbook on the history of the CPSU for people about 12-13 years old that reads like a US university textbook. The sections on Trotsky and Stalin are particularly interesting (they both get slammed of course).
