Keeping it on the positive tip, as the kids used to say, might I suggest those interested in contemporary American music listen to The White Stripes? Jack and Meg White mix blues, garage, folk and pop in varied ways, and Jack White might be the best rock composer since Kurt Cobain. They're fucking great, and their new CD, "Elephant," is well worth the bucks.
