As the former-Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyoming) put it recently, "The

be the American people." Recall that Simpson, along with Bob Dole and
others, met with Baghdad's Beast in the spring of 1990, shoring him up in
the face of growing criticism in the Western media, which Simpson told
Saddam to ignore.
