PS.  I also think that the chances of implementing meaningful reforms,
progressive or otherwise, on the state level are infinitely greater than
doing so on the federal level.  This is yet another reason why secession
of states might be a good progressive idea that might get support from
not so-progressive quarters.  Libertarians can support it, hoping
toestablish their tax free enclave, and so will the Southerners and
fundamentalist christians.
