There were big hopes for Lula and his Workers Party. There were big hopes that the Social Democrats would stop World War I from happening. There were big hopes that the Bolsheviks would lead the Russian Empire to socialism.

It's good to have hope. It's stupid to forget your history lessons. Workers are only as strong as their *own* grassroots, democratic class conscious organization. The class struggle is relentless and will be as long as classes exist. If you put bureaucrats, polystricksters or others in the driver's seat, they're sure to take you for a ride to their destination of choice and perhaps even sell you down the river. We're grown up now. We can take candy (health care ad infinitum) from these people without jumping into their long black limos.
